Raju makes a living by acting as a guide for tourists and visitors on one hand, and a con-man on another. He meets with Rosie Marco during one of his tours, and is attracted to her. He finds out that Rosie is unhappily married, and would like to separate from her spouse, and take up acting and dancing. With Raju's encouragement, Rosie leaves her husband Marco and moves in with Raju as his fiancé. However, her dancing creates scandal in Raju's neighborhood because it appears to his neighbors that he has a woman of ill-repute constantly in his house. However, Rosie eventually succeeds in her dream to become a dancer and both she and Raju become rich beyond their imagination. Raju's lifestyle becomes easy, and he easily succumbs to gambling, and drinking in a big way. He forges Rosie's signature, is caught, arrested and imprisoned. Rosie will now have nothing to do with him. Raju is then sent to prison, where Rosie's constant visits assure her that the two will restart their relationship after he serves his term. After Raju completes his prison sentence, he is released and travels far and wide because he is ashamed to return to his city. He is mistaken for a Saint, and asked to preside over a temple, in a drought stricken region. Raju must then fast for many days in order to appease the gods and, in the process, achieves enlightenment.
