PRESS RELEASE
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh is organising five days Staff Development Programme (SDP) Workshop on ‘Ergonomics in Workplace’ sponsored by Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development-World Bank Project during June 22-26, 2012 at Mechanical Seminar Hall. It is expected that more than 40 non-teaching employees of any institutions/ universities/ department/ PSU/ Govt. organisation/ Semi Govt. / Private Organisation including Field Officer/Staff, Press Professional, Health and Safety Professionals would like to participate the programme.
The goal of ergonomics is to fit the work to the individual, not the individual to the work. Ergonomics is defined as the study of the design of a workplace, equipment, machine, tool, product, environment, and system which takes into consideration human being’s physical, physiological, biomechanical, and psychological capabilities and optimizes the effectiveness and productivity of work systems while assuring the safety, health, and well being of the “concerned person” or “worker”. Practicing good ergonomics achieves increased productivity, improved health and safety of “concerned person” or “worker” higher job satisfaction and better compliance with organisation regulations. The general ergonomics principles that could be applied to the workplace include aiming for dynamic versus static work, optimizing works surface heights, avoiding overload of muscles, avoiding unnatural postures and training individuals to use the workplace, facility, and equipment properly.
In the five days, the participants would get an ample opportunity to know the various aspects of Ergonomics like what is Ergonomics? Ergonomics Awareness, An Introduction to Ergonomics, Understanding Ergonomics at Work, Importance of Office Ergonomics, Office Ergonomics Intervention, Ergonomics of Manual Work, Ergonomics for Human Safety and Productivity, Ergonomics and its today's relevance, Ergonomics of Engineering and Innovation, Ergonomics: Developing the Discipline and Profession, Visual Ergonomics: An Introduction, Ergonomic evaluation of workplace in virtual environment, Ergonomic Intervention for Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders Safety, Ergonomic Evaluation, Ergonomics for employee productivity improvement, Design ideation for elderly and role of ergonomics and Work smart Ergonomics
The objectives of the Workshop is Improved productivity, Improved efficiency with better working posture, Improved efficiency with less exertion, Less fatigue, Reduced maintenance downtime, Identifying waste, Ergonomics can offset the limitations aging employees, Reduced absenteeism, Promoting employee involvement, Improving the human-system interface
Prof. A. M. Chandra, Dr. S. Mukherjee, Dr. S. Gangopadhay from Calcutta University and Prof. Debkumar Chakrabarti, Dr. Sougata Karmakar from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati apart from Mr. T. Patel of Agricultural Engineering Department and Prof. M. Muralidhar of Mechanical Engineering Department of NERIST would deliver their lecture as resource persons.
