Kailasa is an Indian fusion band, founded by Kailash Kher. The name of the band is taken from an accented pronunciation of Kailash's own name as well as Mount Kailash, the abode of Hindu God Shiva. Along with guitars, drums and keyboards; the band incorporates classical Indian instruments and sometimes traditional lyrics to infuse folk and Sufi hue to their songs. Kailash Kher , the singer with a rustic high pitched voice who made Indians `deewana’ with his soulful rendition of `Teri Deewani’ and `Allah Ke Bande’, had come to Chicago on May 26, 2012. He is an outspoken singer who has very strong views about his music, life and the issues that he is associated with.
For Chicago Fans, Kher earlier said, ‘I would like to mention that US audience has been very appreciative of my music and songs and most of my shows have had a very good response. What touches me most is the reaction of my audience to some of my songs. They get very emotional and I have seen those fighting tears as the lyrics touch their heart. This instant response in the form of emotions is the biggest gratification for me for as an artist, I would like to relate my listeners’ feelings.’
Kailash Kher, one of the rarest finds in the music industry; With their latest release 'Rangeele', Kailash Kher and his band Kailasa have been busy touring around the world. The band has created a huge fan base with their unique style and soulful singing and is globally popular positioning themselves amongst few of the world's most renowned bands like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Coldplay.
Coming from a humble background, Kailash Kher made his own space with some really strong performances and it was his union with Naresh and Paresh Kamath that gave birth to one of the most popular bands, Kailasa. Having already given big hits like Sayyiyan, Teri Deewani and Aaogi, Kailasa enthralled the US audience after stealing million of hearts in various places like Dhaka in Bangladesh, Nairobi in Kenya and Birmingham, Liverpool, London and Leicester in the UK and Karachi in Pakistan in the last three months.
Here is responses received from Kailash Kher regarding his music and his band.
How did `Kailasa’ get formed? When there is a will there is a way. We got together for a reason and it was divine consequences that evolved into this band. Kailasa is the street name for Kailash which is the abode of the divine, `Shiva’. We perform nationally as well as internationally. The creation of this band is my effort to give due credit to all the musicians that make the `star singer’. Bollywood has this concept of `lead singer’ who is the focus of audience. Nobody thinks that the singer is nothing without the accompanying musicians. Kailasa is an effort to portray that all musicians are stars. The drummer is as important as the lyricist or the singer. We are all `sangeet ke tapsvi’. I have seen with other singers, the musicians are referred as `orchestra’. In the real sense, `orchestra’ is something big and powerful. But in Hindi film industry, the musicians were never given their due. They were treated second class. Kailasa is our joint effort and we have performed extensively for colleges, NGOs and government events.
What makes Kailasa so successful? We are all very young and the energy of youth is reflected in our music. We are constantly experimenting and evolving. There is vigor, tremor of excitement in our music which shakes up the listener. They feel captivated to our music and this could be the reason for us having an appreciative audience.
What shaped your music?Life has shaped my music. My father used to sing folk songs, Kabir ke dohe and Guru Nanak’s teachings. This singing had a deep impact on me. I decided to learn classical music but there was not much support from my family. So I left home to learn music and earn my livelihood to pay for the fee. But life is very harsh and I ended up working to pay for my next meal. There was no way to get training for classical music and I ended up learning life instead of classical music. So now what I sing is `Life’ with a classical inclination.
Who influenced your singing most?I have grown up listening to Kabir, Bulle Shah so their teachings impressed my bent of mind. The singer I revere most id Pt. Kumar Gandharva for his `Nirgun Bhajan’. Listening to them I had felt that I should learn classical music.
What are your Future Projects?Nothing has been planned. Main bahut gehre gaane gaata hoon. This takes a lot of time to think and pen the lyrics. You supported Anna Hazare by singing for him. How did this happen?
We do what we think is correct and there is no explanation for that.
How do you see your musical journey? It has been strange and rewarding. The people who told me that my kind of singing is out of sync with the Indian music scene now claim that they had prophesized my success as I have a `niche’ voice. These are the ways of the world. Nothing succeeds like success.
